What matters at each age

"What should we actually be focused on at my child's age?"

Every age has its own development priorities. Trying to skip stages usually slows long-term progress.

U6–U8

Enjoyment, ball contact, coordination, belonging. Avoid stacking formal programs. Most progress at this age comes from free play.

U9–U12

Technical foundations, decision-making, repetition, confidence. The right time to start considering one quality development add-on if the child wants more.

U13–U15

Game understanding, position habits, physical literacy, sustainable load. Growth spurts make load management essential.

U16+

Role clarity, individual development plan, physical resilience, ownership of the football week.

Parent takeaway

The right pathway always starts from the child's age and stage - not from what other families are doing.

Questions to ask
  • Is what we are doing age-appropriate?
  • Are we chasing progress that is realistic for this stage?
  • Are we leaving room for free play and rest?
Common mistakes
  • Treating U8 like U13.
  • Adding strength work too young.
  • Comparing growth-spurt years to peers.
